School Newspaper
The Lamp Post is our student’s very own newspaper.
Created three years ago, the paper is staffed by high school juniors and seniors.
The following article explains how we came up with the name “The Lamp Post”.
Making Your Way to the Lamp Post
Article, Marking Your Way to the Lamp Post
In my time with the newspaper, I’ve learned that one of the most difficult hurdles to overcome when one is starting a newspaper is to find some sort of name for the paper. Words like “Gazette” and “Times” naturally pop into one’s head, but coming up with the proper word to place in front of either of these is more challenging than it seems. After sorting through multiple possibilities for the title, we eventually settled with a single idea: the plan to draw a name from a hat.
Co-Editor Sarah Atwell and I were interested in the word “Ballyhoo,” but Chris, also a Co-Editor, cringed upon hearing this word. We wrote down every possibility, tossed them into a hat, and then prayed for the best. The first word: Ballyhoo. Best two-out-of-three? The next two words were “Post.” So, out of fairness, we settled with post. A second drawing was held for the word to precede “Post.” Saints was drawn first, and then the following two drawings yielded the word: Lamp.
By chance, we were granted a very original name for the paper. We recruited Atura to draw the illustration for this new paper, and we set the title in stone. We hope that many great things will come from this paper, and we know that only by the grace of God will we be able to keep up with cranking out this year’s newspaper to meet each deadline.
