Eighth Grade Summer Reading

Reading the Bible daily is our first encouragement.

SELECTIONS
(Click here for Requirements and Assignment sheets)

Required Bible Reading: John

Required Reading: The Outsiders, S. E. Hinton

Required Assignment:

  1.  Vocabulary Log: Students should keep a vocabulary log of words they are unfamiliar with. Each new word should be defined with the best definition for how it is used in the book. Be prepared for class discussion and writing assignments
about the plot, characters, and themes.
  2.  Annotated Journaling: Reading becomes more personal when you are able to get involved in the plot. Annotated
Journaling is a way to do just that. For this project you will be asked to read a book and then jot down some thoughts
when you are finished reading each chapter. Your journal should become your way of talking back to the author or the
characters. Along the way, you will probably discover something about yourself. Enjoy this novel!

  • a.  Section 1: This is the title page. Include your name and the title and author of the book.
  • b. Section 2: This is the section for your thoughts and reactions. Label each page with the title and/or number of
the chapter and the date. After you have finished reading a chapter, write a paragraph response. Be honest
and open about what you have read. Your reactions can be negative, positive, or a combination of both. You
can offer your own opinion on what the character was thinking or should have done differently. Try to get into
the mind of the character(s) and offer an explanation for his/her behavior. Use a separate page per chapter.
Keep your journal entries in order, neat, and readable.
  • c. The Annotated Journal will be collected the first week of school and will count as a TEST GRADE. Grades will be based on completeness, clarity, neatness, and apparent effort.
